A teenager died on Wednesday after jumping off a high rock into a Gloucester quarry and not coming back up to the water’s surface, according to Massachusetts State Police.
State Police divers recovered the 18-year-old male, who was transported to Addison Gilbert Hospital and pronounced dead.
At 1:20 p.m., Gloucester Police reached out to the State Police Underwater Recovery Unit for help. Mass. State Police divers responded to the scene and recovered the teen about two hours after he went into the water.
The 18-year-old was at the quarry with friends. He and a friend jumped off a high rock into the water, police said. The friend immediately resurfaced, but the 18-year-old did not.
State Police detectives assigned to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office and Gloucester Police are handling the death investigation.
